SimplePractice Note Taker alternatives for solo therapists (2026)
Facts checked on 14 October 2026. Prices change, so check each vendor's page before you decide.
SimplePractice Note Taker is an add-on to a SimplePractice subscription, and its telehealth recording works only with SimplePractice Telehealth. Since June 17, 2026, new Note Taker users are opted in by default to the retention of de-identified transcripts, according to SimplePractice's own support page, and can opt out at any time.
If you are a solo therapist or a small practice and want a scribe that is not tied to one EHR, here are six options. MentalNote is ours, so we list it first and say so.

MentalNote (ours)
- Free plan: 5 web-app scribe sessions a month, no time limit, no credit card.
- Record in the browser, including a telehealth call in a browser tab.
- SOAP, DAP, BIRP, GIRP, PIRP and Progress notes, plus Intake and Treatment Plan workflows, and an optional Microsoft Word add-in.
- Its note rules tell the AI to write "Not documented in session" for anything the session did not cover, instead of filling the gap. MentalNote is HIPAA-compliant, with a BAA included on every plan.
Where it is weaker: Premium costs more than the entry prices of Twofold, Supanote, Upheal and Mentalyc shown here, and there is no EHR write-back or native mobile app.
Twofold
- 7 days free with full access, then $19 for the first month on monthly billing (shown next to a crossed-out "Was $69/mo"), or $49 a month billed yearly.
- Live, dictated, typed or uploaded sessions, with iOS and Android apps.
- Twofold says every account receives a signed BAA.
Supanote
- Pricing page: 14-day trial, then Starter from $19.99 a month billed yearly (40 notes) and Pro from $39.99 a month billed yearly (unlimited notes).
- Pro adds "EHR Integration"; Supanote's features page offers a Chrome extension for one-click notes.
- Couple sessions from Starter, group therapy on XL.
Blueprint
- Alongside your EHR: $0.99 a session, with 5 free sessions and credits that never expire. The plan card also shows a $69 per seat option with unlimited sessions.
- Can also be your whole EHR at $1.49 a session.
- Blueprint's BAA takes effect when you create an account.
Upheal
- Free plan: AI notes from text, dictation and uploads, for individual therapy only.
- AI Notes plan: $39 a month for unlimited sessions, including couples and families, with mobile and desktop apps.
- Upheal says its Chrome extension or Mac app captures sessions held on any online calling platform. It also sells its own EHR plans.
Mentalyc
- 14-day free trial, no credit card. Mini is $19.99 a month for 40 notes, or $14.99 a month billed annually.
- EHR extension for one-click note transfer; unlimited transfers from Pro.
- Lists consent forms and a BAA among its plan features.
How to choose
- Your EHR. If you stay on SimplePractice and its telehealth, Note Taker keeps everything in the chart. If not, pick a standalone tool.
- How you capture. Need a phone app or audio upload? Twofold, Blueprint and Upheal offer apps. If you work in the browser or in Word, MentalNote fits.
- How notes reach the chart. Extensions (Supanote Pro, Mentalyc) save copy and paste. MentalNote and Twofold rely on copy or export.
- Price. Supanote (billed yearly), Mentalyc and Twofold (billed yearly) start lower than MentalNote Premium. Blueprint shows per-session and per-seat prices. On the pages we checked on 14 October 2026, MentalNote is the only one here whose free plan includes live recording every month.
- Data terms. MentalNote is HIPAA-compliant, with a BAA included on every plan. Twofold, Supanote, Blueprint and Mentalyc each publish a BAA or list one in their plans. Read each vendor's retention and training terms yourself.
