TherapyNotes alternatives (2026): prices compared
Prices checked 24 October 2026 on each vendor's own pricing page (US dollars). Prices and offers change, so check before you decide.
The short answer
If you want to leave TherapyNotes as your EHR, compare SimplePractice (Starter $49 a month), ICANotes (Non-Prescribing $75 a month for full-time clinicians) and Blueprint ($1.49 a session as your EHR). If TherapyNotes works and you only want faster notes, add an AI scribe next to it: MentalNote (free plan with 5 web-app scribe sessions a month; Premium $99 a month), Mentalyc (from $19.99 a month) or Upheal ($39 a month). TherapyNotes Solo is $69 a month.
TherapyNotes is a full practice-management EHR: Solo is $69 a month for one user, Group is $89 a month for the first clinician plus $60 for each additional clinician, and its AI notes (TherapyFuel) add $40 a month per clinician. Before you switch, decide what you are replacing. MentalNote is ours, so we list it first and say so.

- Free plan: 5 web-app scribe sessions a month, no time limit, no credit card. Premium: $99 a month or $990 a year, with unlimited note generation.
- Records the session in the browser (with your client's consent) and drafts SOAP, DAP, BIRP, GIRP, PIRP or Progress notes, plus Intake and Treatment Plan workflows. An optional Microsoft Word add-in drafts from a typed summary.
- Its note rules tell the AI to write "Not documented in session" for anything the session did not cover, instead of filling the gap.

Pick it if you want AI-drafted notes next to the EHR you already use, or a free plan you can keep using.
SimplePractice
- Starter $49, Essential $79 and Plus $99 a month, billed monthly; extra clinicians on Plus are $74 each, and 6 or more clinicians get a quote. 30-day free trial.
- AI notes: Note Taker is a $35 a month add-on, also included in Care Aide ($59 a month for the account owner). On 24 October 2026 new customers who start a paid plan within 7 days were offered 50% off for 3 months.
Pick it if you want a like-for-like EHR switch with scheduling, billing, a client portal and AI notes in the chart. Skip it if your main problem is notes: you would be moving your whole practice to fix one task. See SimplePractice pricing and Note Taker vs MentalNote.
ICANotes
- Full-time clinicians: Notes Only $55 a month (non-prescribers), Non-Prescribing $75, Prescribing $213, plus a $99 activation fee. Part-time clinicians: $35, $45 and $138.
- AI Scribe is an add-on at $49 a month per user; telehealth is $20 a month per user. Practice quotes on request.
Pick it if you want a behavioral-health EHR with a notes-only or part-time plan, or you prescribe. Skip it if you want AI notes without changing systems.
Blueprint
- As your whole EHR: $1.49 a session, with a 30-day free trial.
- Alongside your EHR: 5 free sessions to start. When we checked, the pricing page showed two prices for this plan, $69 a seat a month for unlimited sessions and $0.99 a session, so check which one you are offered. Enterprise plans are quote-based.
Pick it if you want to run AI notes next to TherapyNotes first and maybe move your EHR later, or you prefer per-session pricing. Skip it if you want a free plan that keeps going after the first sessions. See MentalNote vs Blueprint.
Mentalyc
- Mini $19.99 a month for 40 notes ($14.99 billed annually), Basic $39.99 for 100 ($29.99), Pro $69.99 for 160 ($59.99), Super $119.99 for 330 ($99.99). Team seats $59.99 a month ($49.99 billed annually).
- 14-day trial with Pro access (15 notes), no credit card. Lists consent forms and a BAA on every plan.
Pick it if you keep TherapyNotes and want a low-priced AI note tool with a monthly note allowance. Skip it if your volume is unpredictable and you dislike per-note caps. See Mentalyc alternatives and pricing.
Upheal
- Free plan: AI notes from text-to-note, dictation and uploads, individual therapy only. AI Notes plan: $39 a month, flat, for unlimited notes from video, audio, dictation and uploads, including couples and families.
- AI Notes includes built-in telehealth with automated notes; AI Assistant Pro is an optional $39 a month extra. Upheal also sells EHR plans paid per session; group practices talk to sales.
Pick it if you want a low flat price for recorded sessions, or a free tier for typed and dictated notes. Skip it if you want live recording on a free plan. See MentalNote vs Upheal.
When MentalNote isn't the right fit
We would rather you pick the right tool than sign up and leave. Look elsewhere if:
- You need scheduling, billing, claims or a client portal. MentalNote is not an EHR; it drafts notes only.
- You want notes written straight into your chart. MentalNote relies on copy or export. TherapyFuel, TherapyNotes' own AI, writes into the TherapyNotes chart for $40 a month per clinician.
- You want the lowest paid price for a light caseload. Premium is $99 a month, more than the entry plans of several tools on this page. If 5 free sessions a month are not enough and you see few clients, a capped plan may cost less.
- You mainly document couple, family or group sessions. They are not listed on our features page; some tools above list them.
- You want a native phone app for in-person sessions. MentalNote records in the browser.
How to choose
- Replace the EHR or add a scribe? Scheduling, billing and claims mean an EHR (SimplePractice, ICANotes, Blueprint as your EHR). Notes alone mean a scribe next to TherapyNotes (MentalNote, Mentalyc, Upheal, Blueprint alongside your EHR).
- Compare against TherapyFuel. If you stay on TherapyNotes, its own AI is $40 a month per clinician and writes into the chart. A standalone scribe has to beat that on price, workflow or note quality for you.
- How notes reach the chart. MentalNote and most standalone scribes rely on copy or export; check whether that is acceptable for your volume.
- Data terms. MentalNote is HIPAA-compliant, with a BAA included on every plan. Read each vendor's BAA, retention and training terms yourself.
